I own both cartridge choices in a various assortment of rifle configurations and have dropped tons of deer and hog with both. Yes the .243 will kill a deer just as dead but in all reality, with a heart lung shot, the 7mm/08 will have a faster effect because of the size and power difference. That's not to say that the .243 is ineffective and shouldn't be used. I've used it, all my kids have at one time or another used it and it's a definite deer killer. Either choice for his daughter would be fine.
I couldn't have said it better. Both good deer cartridges but the 7mm would get my nod too.
I personally have got the nostalgia bug and although I have several bolt action rifles I have succumbed to the graceful lines of the lever action. My favorite deer / black bear rifles these days are my Marlin 1895s in .45-70. (a Guide Gun and a Cowboy) A bit much for deer but a genuine black bear thumper.
