A slight difference in hardness goes a long way in expanding type projectiles. There is a reason Barnes uses pure copper and its certainly not to save money. Guilding metal is cheaper

Copper 30-35BHN
Guilding metal 45ish BHN for 5% zinc. 10% zinc is around 56BHN.
