A little surface rust wont interfere with how it shoots noticably. But clean it as soon and as well as you can before it begins to pit the metal. Once that happens you will indeed see a difference. After the rust is gone, I recommend using 3 in 1 oil on it. the oil will penetrate quickly and stop the aftereffect that many rust removers will cause.
