Noise reduction can be a big benefit. I've had them bolt when my open zipper rubs against itself. I've had them bolt when I lay my rifle on the rail in a shooting tower. Even just taking the safety off can get iffy.

You may get away with making some noise, it depends on whether they associate the noise with danger or not. If they hadn't already smelled you and bolted, any strange unnatural sound is subject to set them off.

I use cut up old bicycle tire inner tubes and sometimes electrical tape.
