If so,how do you get it out of the bore when cleaning the gun?
I am not qualified enough to answer your lube questions so I will leave that to others who are more knowledgeable regarding the topic.
However I have found the best way to get a muzzle loader barrel clean is also the simplest: hot water. After removing the lock I will plug the flash hole with a toothpick. Then just pour very hot water down the barrel and let that sit for a while. Pour the water out and swab with a wet (water) bore mop. Some more hot water, pour out and patches to dry - the hot barrel will help with the drying process. Once dry run a patch with oil to coat the barrel.
You will be using water that is close to boiling hot so gloves to protect your hands. I also wrap a rag around the muzzle to prevent any spilled water from getting between the stock and barrel. And a plastic funnel to prevent spillage as well - that may not be "traditional" but it is better than burnt hands!
It sounds strange to pour water down a barrel but it really does work.
Good luck.
