That rabbit had tulameria (spelling?). You COULD eat the rabbit if you were in like a survival situation, as long as it's cooked thoroughly. Otherwise it's not worth the "risk". It is transferable to humans so you were smart to discard it. Usually you won't find a rabbit with tulameria in the colder months. They say after the first few good frosts, it's officially rabbit season.
That's what I always was told, Squirrel's and rabbit's after the first frost. Old timers must have known something.
