I have to agree on the 30-06 as a good all around cartridge. As for the 700 - that is also a good choice. Other manufactures you may want to look at are the previously mentioned Mossberg (pretty good ratings for an economically priced rifle), Browning, Winchester and Tikka as well as T/C.
You should handle as many as you can and get the one that feels best to you and not go by name alone.
