When I used to deer hunt I never used a tree stand and I never made a blind in advance. I just found a place that seemed like a good place to hunt from. At one such place I sat on a dead fall log behind a bush of some kind. From this position, I looked up a narrow clear cut to a hill about 120 yards away. I was comfortable. I was in the shade (shadows help to conceal the hunter). Most of my body was cloaked by the bushes in front of me. I shot 3 deer from that specific place over about 4 years. Another place was under a small tree with a view to a place where woods stopped close to a small stream where deer crossed and drank. I was in the shade. The ground had some dead branches laying around that at least partly obscured my lower body. I took 2 deer from this area.

I prefer hunting from these places. I am wholly free to select a position as I want based on the wind or any other special conditions at that time. If you know your deer hunting ground, this works very well . . . and you ought to know your deer hunting ground. That is the best tool for success is knowing in advance your hunting ground. Where do the deer go and when? Sit in the shadows. Move as little as possible. When you DO move -- and we all move -- move SLOWLY. This includes your head as well as your hands. Try to keep some stuff in front of you -- bushes, broken branches -- that breaks up your siluouette. Good luck.
