You will get frustrated trying to avoid roads and other target shooters, but such is the life of hunting on public land so close to a major city. There are areas though, just look at a map, find the largest areas with no roads and start walking into it. Just out of curiosity has anyone tried the back side of pikes peak? That area should be good for an over the counter tag right?
It seems like I looked into the backside of the peak, a couple of seasons ago, and what I seem to remember is, a lot of private land, so no easy access to public lands, and if you go near gold camp road, then you are in reach of yuppie road hunters. I may remember it wrong, so worth checking into closer. Signal butte, and that area seems to be the best area for 511 that I've heard. I did see a few really nice bulls in 2011, I was on the teller side of the county line, and across the line fence, which is also the county line and gmu border in jeffco, was a heard of elk, with several big boys in it fighting. If we go this year, which is in the air at this point, it'll likely be 55, or something along those lines. I've at least seen elk there.
