Finally got my scope base/rings and put an old Leupold 4X scope on the wolf today.
Decided to take a few shots at the range when I went to check my feeder & game cam on the farm I hunt today.
Since all I had was a few old sabot/bullet combinations I started off with a MMP orange sabot & 350gr .458 cast bullet over 90gr ffg Goex to get it on paper. One shot & one scope adjustment at 50ft, then I moved the target to 50 yards. First shot was 6" high & 2" right, so I adjusted the scope and fired a 3 shot (circled) group. (swabbed with one wet & one dry patch between shots)
Adjusted for elevation and fired one 250gr bullet to see where it would impact. (slightly high/right)
Looks like with some load tweaking this rifle might perform well.
My 13YO son will be using it, too, so I decided on around 90gr ffg for a hunting load, and can drop back about 20gr for him to practice. Any hunting shots will be at less than 125 yards, so I see no need for a heavy powder charge. I'll get some bullets/sabots to hunt with (probably 250gr XTPs) and sight in dead-on at 100 yards before the October muzzeloading season.
I didn't spend much time shooting today, just wanted to get it on paper and see if it showed promise.
My observations were that the Wolf is pleasant to shoot, the no-tools breech plug worked "as advertised", and blowback was virtually non-existant. I really like this CVA so far!
