The difference between a 338 Win mag and the 340 Wby isnt enough to amount to anything, the difference in ammo price and availabilty is. Like you said, dead is dead, a elk, moose, or bear will never know the difference between the two but your wallet will. I have had both in the past, got rid of the 340, still have my 338. Trust me, when you touch of a 338 Win mag you will know its there!
