Would that be a valid reason to discontinue it, though? Not enough deer killed?

More likely, its political. He wants it to stand alone, on its own accord. The use of crossbows, IMO, is about the ability to use one. Not now many deer are killed with one each season. Its about expanding the base of hunters to include those who maybe cannot draw a compound and may choose not to hunt with a firearm.
