Well I've had great success with my Rem 870 20 gauge. I shoot Copper solid slugs and its accurate out to 200 yards.
I am sure its lethal out to 250, but i would not try it unless it was to put a wounded one down.
I put a doe down on the run at 193 yards with it this season, just prior I dropped a 210lb field dressed 4.5 yr old buck in its tracks at 144 yards.

But it depends on what your looking for, brush, heavy cover and close shots, nothing could beat a 12 gauge with Lightfield slugs
Long distance, out to 400 yards the Hoosier 358 is a great gun
I was told the best whitetail gun was a 25/06 , but they are not legal in Indiana (yet)
