The 7.62x54R used in the Dragunov/SVD is actually not at all a version of the .308/7.62x51, but in fact predates it by decades.
It's long. It's cumbersome. You can achieve far better accuracy for less money. If I were in the market for something new for hunting, it certainly wouldn't be this. Yup, it's different. So would be having a third eyeball in the middle of your forehead.
