I pay attention to early rubs. I've read from several authors that the mature deer are making the earliest rubs. I haven't witnessed it, but there may be something to it. I also make sure to look around in the general area, as a bunch of rubs concentrated in a small area can indicate a buck's bedding area. If it seems like there is good cover and the area offers a good vantage of the surrounding area, I keep it in mind as a bedding area and try not to bother it too much.
I have not found a fresh rub where I hunt, but I have seen some scrapes. There are a few scrapes in these woods that the deer use all year.
