I would use Pyrodex or T7 FFG - they have a less harsh kick than T7 FFFG or BH 209 in my opinion.
My dad has a bad shoulder and I have worked up 2 loads for him with his CVA Wolf:
70 grain T7 FFG with the .40 cal 200 grain XTP
70 grains T7 FFG with the .452 250 grain Deep Curl
Both are very accurate out to 75 yards (about as far as he will shoot). He's taken 1 deer with the XTP and 1 deer with the Deep Curl. The 250 grainers do kick a little more, but not too noticeable. Personally, I would start him out on the 250 Deep Curl with 60 grains of powder for practice, then bump it up to 70 or 80 grains for hunting. The 200 XTP is also a good choice if he is really recoil-sensitive.
