For $300 I'd be looking for a used Ruger P series pistol. I don't think you can get much better for the price.

If you want to stay under $200, the Hi Points would be where I looked. The Rugers are a big step up though.

I'd personally stay away from anything Taurus just based on their customer service alone. If you ever do have a problem, don't expect to get it resolved.
