I usually use a contrasting colored trailer to slow the fall rate, in cooler weather. Usually use no trailer in warm weather. Trim weed gaurds even with hookpoint and work them with fingers, to get some of the stifness out of them. I also trim the skirt right behind the hook.
The important thing is to "match the hatch". Choose lures that resemble forage native to the water you are fishing and that are available during the season you are fishing in.
