What kind of bullets? 158gr hollow points? What velocity? Around 1000fps? Pretty marginal for deer - especially if shots aren't perfect broadside. Penetration and energy are pretty low. Minimum rifle I would go is 30-30. If you want a rifle in a pistol caliber, get a 44 mag, use heavy bullets and keep shots inside 75 yards.
