RE: What' s the best 44mag round for whitetail???
When I had my Ruger SB, I was shooting 200gr & 240 gr Hornadys, Speer 240' s and some Hard cast 250gr bullets. Of these, the 240 JHP or JSP worked best.
I see they now have 270gr bullets on the market, the Gold Dot bullets I believe by speer might be a good choice!! I hit a small buck with the 200gr Hornady in the front shoulder and it destroyed the entire front end of that deer!! The meat was Blood shot big time!! Stick with a heavy JHP or HSP that mushrooms out nice for a better energy transfer. The 180 or 200 grainers are way to light, and with that increased speed they destroy way too much meat after the intial hit!! Just my opinion. The 250gr Hardcast bullets just punched a hole right through the deer, never opened up!! While nice for target shooting, bad choice for deer hunting!!
