Default VA Squirrel Hunting: Fall vs Spring

I was only able to get one fall hunt since deer hunting is the "priority", but man, after that hunt, I was regretful that I didn't get more hunts in! What a blast! I enjoy deer hunting more, and it is much more rewarding for me, but I have to admit that squirrel hunting is just more FUN!!

Anyway, I am determined to get in the woods for some spring squrrel action, but I have never done it before. How do squirrel behavior and food sources differ in the spring? Are there still plenty of ground squirrels? Are they as vocal as they are in the fall? I refuse to hunt with a shotgun in the fall, but is using a .22LR practical with all the spring foliage?

Yes, it is my good intention to hunt spring squirrel. But once I wet a fishing line, I don't know if I'll be able to trade my fishing rods for a long gun. Once that switch gets flipped, it may be impossible to get me back in the woods until the air crisps again. And with all the warm weather we're having, I'm itching to wet a line right now!
