I've never shot one but I do think the 260 should be a fine cartridge. But the only thing it has over the 6.5x55 is it's in a short action.
A mistake back there about the development of the 260, Jim Carmichael wasn't even close to being the one to develop it. According to P.O. Ackley's vol 1 handbook, Ken Waters did the most developement work on it. It was called the 263 Express. I have heard of it called the 6.5x308 also but don't find it written anywhere.
The Ackley vol 1 book I have had it's 14th printing in 1984. I don't know if American hunter's are smart enough to recognize how good this cartridge really is. I have a 6.5x55 and a 6.5x06. If I had neither I would get a 260. Little late in my life to go chasing new cartridges no matter how good they are.
It's populariy, whatever it has is suprizing though other than the short action. The 6.5x55 does every thing a bit better and so did the 6.5 Rem Mag. Now after all these years someone decides we need a new 6.5? Good cartridge!
