Read the above article. In NY, these hunters shot someones "PET" that escaped the local zoo. They will loose their hunting licenses, and the DEC will probably fine them as well.
"PETs", or whatever you may call them are protected in NY, unless specifically listed in the hunting laws, like hogs.
Follow up on that story and post back, I'm curious to see what happens. But again, this is a different situation. This was a hunter mistakingly killing something. I still doubt that they will lose their license. Also, look up your states rules about feral swine. By your definition they are also "pets" but your state says
"DEC's goal is to eradicate feral swine from New York's landscape. Feral swine in New York can have tremendous negative impacts on native plants, native wildlife, livestock, agriculture, and humans including" Which tells me they do care about exotics and want them shot.
