What brand of alkalines were you using?
Pnut: I've read various posts where you mentioned the Lithiums, so I did some voltage readings as follows:
Energizer Titanium 1.55 volt.
Energizer Lithium 7X 1.79 volt.
Energizer Lithium 8X 1.83 volt.
These batteries were fresh out of the package, never used, but I have had them for approximately one year. Batteries were checked with a digital meter. This extra voltage is more than worth the difference in price as compared to standard batteries and especially if the batteries are used in colder weather. If not using rechargeable batteries, I would be like you and highly recommend the Lithium.
In Canada, when I purchased the 7X and 8X from a battery supply store they cost approximately $16.00 for a package of four.
