Since it was thank's day, i wasn't going hunting. What i did this morning was go and shoot the Disc Extreme loaded with 300g Deep Curl. Primer was W209, sabot was short black Harvester. We went shooting for enjoyment, to check accuracy, and to check bullet speed.

First i shot 110g BH209. Speeds were measured at:

1932 fps
1891
1903
1943
1921
which averages to 1918 fps.

Then i shot 120g BH209. Speeds follow:

1996 fps
2011
1978
1999
2028
2005
which average to 2001.5 fps.

One needs to remember that the chronograph i used this morning may not be reading true speeds. It may be optimistic, or it may be pessimistic. I suspect it is reporting optimistic speeds. I may send it to the manufacturer, and ask for a calibration.

It seems to me that shooting more powder does not create extraordinary recoil. The 120g load did have more recoil, but to me recoil is not an issue. To me one should use a load that gives the most accuracy. Today was the first time i ever used 120g BH in the disc extreme. It seemed to shoot more accurate than the 110 load i have been shooting. If it turns out that 120g is more accurate than 110g, that is what i will be shooting in this rifle. The recoil of 120g is more than 110g, but today it seemed to shoot more accurate, and the recoil wasn't too much. If one day a 100g load gives the best accuracy, that is the load i will be using.

It is my opinion that if one wants to be able to hit deer at 100 yard, and at 200 yard, the way to do it, is not by adding more powder.

If one owns a Leupold scope with 1/4 minute adjustment clicks, one can send the scope to the custom shop, and have them modify it to use the CDS dial. Cost is about $150. It is my opinion that this is the best way get a muzzle loader rifle to successfully shoot long range.

Another way to set your rifle up to shoot from 0 to 200 yard is use a scope with ballistic compensating reticle.
