Go out and buy an old digital camera (film camera are too expensive to process) about 1.4 megapixels. Have a friend handy who can operate one.

Go out and find some birds. As the dog finds a bird, your friend can take a picture from a 100 yards out. If the dog doesn't react, your friend can repeat the procedure while coming closer.

Then you can graduate to a higher pixel range, 3.1 megapixel....
