I would like to try to offer somewhat of an explanation. I do not know whether it will make any sense or even if it is totally correct… but here goes.
I really do not think Knight itself wants to be an E-business. The new startup pretty much required them to be because they had lost all of their established distributors when the company failed. Not many of these same distributors were or are willing to jump right back in with the new company until they know if the company is going to survive and be able to continually supply them with the supplies they need.
I am sure, but do not actually know, the initial attempt to get back in the market place with the new product was hinged on pre-orders so that they could gauge how many of what to build. I do not think they felt that they could contract for a 100 guns if they could not sell them. I also think they needed the capitol off the sold guns to contract for new guns. I do not believe that Knight re-started with a big supply of money and they had even less parts for the old guns. It was a really big venture for a fledgling company with almost all new faces.
Prices… prices from Knight, I believe, will always be higher than what a distributor can sell them for. They need to be or why would a distributor sign on. Knight wants the distributors (creating more jobs for other businesses) to make enough money on the products to make it worthwhile for them to carry not products and accessories. If they (Knight) were selling the same products at a reduced price how would other businesses be able to handle, ship and bill and make a profit?
I honestly do not think Knight wants to be an e-business, yes, they will supplement other e-business, but if they were to become a dedicated e-business – think of the extra costs that would add to the cost of Knight doing business. Why not allow other business in America to become the distributors?
I know this does not answer all of your questions and I am certainly do not write well enough to explain it correctly, but I hope I expressed the possible thoughts.
