I guess it depends on a couple of factors. If he was downwind of you, he might have caught your sent as he got closer. If he was looking in your direction and you called to him he might very well have spotted you. On the other hand, deer are curious animals and he may have come in to investigate. I have found it to be a crapshoot most of the time. If the deer have been hunted pretty hard in your hunting area, they get educated pretty quick. Hope that helps.
