The o-ring is not supposed to roll out of the way, the o-ring just applies tension on the blades to hold them in place until it penetrates, a which time the shoulders of the blades get pushed back, and the blades deploy. Sometimes the o-ring stays in place, sometimes it rolls down the shaft.
