I've been doing the Mapquest thing and Allagash is 14 hours from my house. I also talked to a buddy who hunted at Tyler Kelly's place and it took him 14 hours from near where I live.
I was thinking about Labor Day weekend, too. That would be one less day we'd have to take off. My only issue would be if this was the first week of school. This year, school starts the day after Labor Day (Tuesday). I'm not sure how it falls next year.
We'll make it work. The price and time away from school is something I'm going to have to clear with the wife, though.
