Both Google earth and mytopo.com will let you print 8 x 10 satellite or topo maps. Google Earth is simple to print, but if you have any problems just do a “print screen” (PrtScn key or Ctrl + PrtScn depending on computer). This print screen option also works for Bing maps. For mytopo just go to the “free browsable online maps” section on the lower right corner main page. Browse to the area you want (probably want to switch to topo) and you will see the option to print to computer on the left side lower corner of the screen.

If you are using a new Android telephone and get the backcountry navigator app, which works with the phone’s GPS (no cell phone reception required) you’ll get access to all the topo and satellite maps you want right to your pc for a one-time fee of $9.99. I did that a year ago and I think is the best maps application so far. No need for $400-500 GPS units. You can take the file you download to a Kinkos store or any other printer and have a map the size you want for a lot less that you’ll pay buying from map vendors (such as mytopo).
