If you really want to test out how well I've thought through my home defense strategy or test out my experience, then by all means, come on by my house uninvited some night... Heck, come on by whether I'm home or not, my fiancee will be happy to ventilate you with 17 9mm JHP's, even if I'm not there.
Long guns have been proven time and time again to be LESS effective for home defense than handguns. The speed and mobility of a handgun always trumps the increased firepower of shotguns and rifles. Dead is dead.
