You can't stop the aging process - I have a scope for the same exact reasons as you.
I have done running shots with the scope several times. The scope has remained dead on and I have not needed to adjust it now for over 7 yrs. I do check each yr.
I put on a Nikon Monarch Turkey Pro - has a nice diamond recticle which helps to get on target qucikly if needed. The diamond reticle turned to 4x power a turkeys head will fill it at 40 yards so it is a range finder too. But I hardly use that. The problem I have is I call them in too close - less than 12 yards the last 5 birds I have killed. So I need to be dead on because of the tight pattern.
Put the crosshairs where it belongs and the bird is yours as long as it is in range I might add.
Wound a bird or two because you can't see as you guessed, thought the dots matched up and you will be with me using a scope as age does affect eyesight no matter how many carrots you eat!
Oh one more thing. Take off my extended turkey choke and add the slug rifled choke and I have a deer gun!
