Ya, I am not much of a deer hunter, elk are my passion but the wolves here are getting more than their fair share.
We have a few muleys in this area and a lot more whitetail. I hunt fairly local and our whitetails do not get the massive racks. Getting a whitetail around here is pretty much a ho-hum thing.
When I was younger - much younger and could go where the elk really were - I did not even bother with hunting deer.
I use a 300 grain for elk also. I was using .458/300 Nosler Partitions, but have switched to Lehigh .458/300 grain bullets as of late.
I've always hunted both to extend the seasons, but I don't need that anymore. I'll just put all my energy into elk. Way more fun to hunt for elk. As you say. Deer are kind of easy, and I never did get used to eating venison.
Ok, elk it is until they stick me in a rocker.
