Try keeping it simple on the dull stock. It appears stained but not "sealed". Light sanding and raise the grain a few times and re-sand lightly. Then give it a few coats of a satin tongue oil. Let each coat dry a couple days then buff it down with the finest grade of steel wool.
Repeat the tongue oil until you are happy. It usually take me about 3-6 coats depending on the quality i want.
