Default J.C. Higgins mod.20

My father-inlaw has passed down a JC Higgins model 20 - 12 gauge to my son. This thing has some kind of vented supressor on the end of the barrel. It looks wierd. Does anyone know more about this gun. the suppresor is about 3-4 inches long and you can see a gap in the barrel about 1 1/2 inches long inside of the supressor. I' m not sure if this thing is even supposed to be a supressor or compensator or what. I haven' t shot it because I don' t know if it would be safe. Any help would be great.
