As far as a point system we don't have one yet here in NM. It is just luck of the draw. About 75% of tags go to resident hunters, 5% to nonresident hunters and 20% to nonresident hunters using a state registered guide. Those numbers are about as close as I can remember but not exact. Private landowners whose property holds and supports elk are allotted a certain number of tags each year depending on the number of elk they support. I have land owner tags available every year. A hunter could hunt every year if he wanted to go the private land route. I grew up hunting CO and let me tell you NM is great to hunt elk. It can be a little tough to draw but you don't ever have to worry about the crowds of hunters. Here in Chama we have one of the largest elk herds in the US. We don't have the freakish monsters of the Jilla and Arizona but we have lots of elk and a great bull-cow ratio which makes for an awesome rut! Thanks for all the inquiries and god bless!
