As far as training is concerned, you should join a local NAVHDA chapter. You will get everything you need from it including the opportunity to meet some great people.

On the dog end, any of the versatiles will work well for you. Personally I would favor a Wirehair over a Griff, but it's all in the eye of the beholder.

The best thing you can do is go to some NAVHDA and/or JGHV training days/hunt tests and watch the dogs. You will see a wide variety of dogs. Narrow it down to a few and then research them. Talk to as many breeders as you can and find one or two that hunt the game you hunt and in the way you like to hunt. These are the guys that will produce the dog that you want.
