RE: should i get a lil closer?
Without seeing your location and knowing what the normal travel/route pattern of the deer is in respect to your stand location, and the terrain, growth, etc, that is not an easy question to answer. However, beware of chasing the deer with your stand. Doing so can be extremely detrimental.
Try to pattern the deer the best you can, and then set your stand as strategic as possible for the yardage you feel confident shooting. Too close to a heavily used trail/route is never good. If possible, positioned your stand so that you are afforded a shot for at least two different directions of travel.
If you are lucky, you are sitting in a feeding area (browse, grass, acorns, etc.) If so, watch for the deer to stay in the immediate area and start to meander around your area as they feed. As long as you can avoid being picked off by a lookout, being in an area where they feed (head down) is a plus.
