Default RE: Hunters, any of you ever had your weapon fail in the field?

Yes. But it is a great story. I was taking a nap (that' s called watching a draw) by some rocks. Chipmunks started calling and disturbed my little catnap. I' m listening and I hear something approaching coming up the draw. Low & behold I see a nice cow elk coming toward me. I slowly get my gun up and shot. She drops and never moves again.

I head down the 50-75 yds to check her. I' m standing there and two more cows are standing up the hill calling her. I radio my husband to do the ultimate " Honey, do you want me to fill your tag too?" question. He relunctantly says if I have a shot to go ahead and take it. Guess what!!! My Remington 30-06 was jamed big time. By the time I got it unjammed those cows were long gone. Next question Hubby had for me was " How close to the road and is it up hill or downhill" . He was able to drive right to me and the animal so he was very happy. He was pretty happy I didn' t fill his tag too. He didn' t get an elk that year but camp would have been pretty tense.

We went and did some target shooting to check out the gun. It jammed pretty consistantly when it fed a bullet in. We took the gun to our gun smith and had it worked on. Since I' m not very knowledgeable in the particulars, I couldn' t tell you what was being done to it. Then I took it out and shot it some more with the same results. Jamming on feeding the 2nd bullet. It went back to the factory and they went over it. Guess what. All that was wrong is that my husband loads his own ammo and the factory people said only use factory ammo in this gun and it' ll never jam. They' re right. My daughter got a nice spike elk and I' ve gotten a 4 point Elk with it. No problems any more.
