Higher Gears don't make the engine work as hard and thus it uses less gas.
Lower Gears make the engine work harder and so it uses more gas.

PS. If you have a manual shifting ATV then you have more opurtunites to use less gas.
Automatic ATV's are good but they end up using more gas.
