Yes it can be replaced but have a pro shop do it! There are a lot of springs and small parts in there that after seeing it done I would be afraid to do myself. I had the same problem...went through 3 different cords until I took a small metal file and filed the bottom of the hole it comes out of to make it smoother. I haven't seen a bit of fraying since.
