I think Remington was trying to compete with Savage and others in the value priced rifle category, the only problem is that they made a rifle which is actually worse than the competition in that price range. Obviously, a rifle in the $350-$500 bracket isn't going to have a gorgeous piece of wood on it, or any kind of hand engraving, but at the very least it should be durable, reliable and functional, of which the 770 is neither.
