There are lots of things you have to look at. How big of a river? Im guessing not too big, with a fast current or you wouldnt think about setting there. If you have had a really dry summer it wouldnt be a bad sit, but like everyone else said the acorns are an awesome place to start. If your "deep woods" has good sign, and something to keep them there thats where I would be. It is getting to be that time of year where the deer are worried more about other things than just eating and sleeping. Where I am its not uncommon for them to spend several days in a row without even leaving the corn field. If they have a water source, food source, and a place to bed they are happy.
If you sit in the woods and it is a good spot and far enough from the river, it wouldnt hurt to think about putting a small watering hole nearby during the offseason. Another thing to keep them in an area they already like...
