Default Camp Dry on rain gear

Does anyone use extra waterproofing on thier raingear? I'm not talking the rubber suit type of raingear, I'm talking the Gore-tex or similar materials (even wool). I know it smells for a few days but after a week or so it seems to go away.
My rain gear is ok for a mild rainy day but if it pours for an hour or so, I'm soaked. I carry a lite camo plastic poncho for these situations right now, but if you ever tried shooting with a poncho you will know that this is not the best solution. I can't afford those big dollar suits. Any thoughts or any suggestions on other products?
