Just picked up a Marlin XS7 in .308 this week actually. Going to range today or tomor will let you know. Put a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on mine. Paid $330 for mine at local shop. Marlin comes with a scope base so saves you a few bucks there. Can't comment on the Mossberg but will let you know after range day how mine does.
