When I was faced with the same decision, ultimately it came down to the .308 being available in a short action rifle saving some gun length and weight. My .308 is pretty exclusively a white tail gun. If I thought it would be put into service for heavier game: elk, moose, etc. I would opt for the 30-06, which has bullets available up to 220 grain, which certainly gives more options in bullets.
