Sounds very similar to the little Honda I used to have. It went through soooo many impellers I actually got good at taking the lower off.
On the shift linkage, the thin nut is just a jam nut to keep the long (coupling nut) from moving with the vibration.
Like Ken said put the shift lever in reverse and it will be easier to get to the linkage.
