Depending on where you are Buffalo grass is a good low maintenance grass. It's a warm season grass so its getting pretty late to seed now. I have seeded buffalo this late before though. If you seed it with a cover crop annual like wheat or rye, the cover crop will pop up this fall and protect the ground through the winter until the soil temperatures rise and the buffalo can poke through.
