I would go with a rifle. Those little devils are tough S.O.B.s. Get you a flat shooting caliber with some pop to it so you don't have to track them far. They can get aggressive when wounded and cornered.
This is good advice. I have taken them with all of guns except a muzzle loader mentioned in the OP, but a good high power rifle really knocks the daylights out them, and clearly has more punch than the shotguns slugs that I've seem them hit with. Had to do a little tracking with both a 12 and 20 gauge shotgun, and a 357 from a carbine, but the 150 grn 30.06 (made for deer and other medium game) smacked em right down in their tracks.
